Software Development & Engineering Recruitment

The wrong software engineer costs more than their salary.

Delayed releases, accumulated technical debt, and a team whose trust takes months to rebuild all trace back to the same root cause: a recruiter who could not genuinely assess the candidate in front of them before placing them into a team.

Gravitas specialises in software development and engineering recruitment across the UK. Our consultants work within specific technical disciplines, not across every vacancy on the market. When you brief us, you're speaking to people who understand the difference between a software engineer and a software developer, between a solution architect and a tech lead, and what 'strong' looks like in your stack.

Software Development & Engineering hiring for you

From our Germany Leadership team.

Software Development & Engineering <b>hiring for you </b>

Software development and engineering recruitment is the process of finding, assessing and placing the technical professionals who design, build, maintain and evolve software systems. It covers permanent hires, fixed-term appointments and contract engagements across the full spectrum of engineering roles - from mid-level developers to principal engineers and engineering leadership.

It is a discipline that demands genuine technical understanding. Software engineering is not a single skill set. A backend engineer building enterprise systems in C# is a fundamentally different profile from an embedded software engineer writing low-level firmware, a Java developer building distributed backend services, or a QA engineer designing the automated test frameworks that keep both from breaking in production. A recruiter who cannot distinguish between these profiles cannot assess them accurately - and cannot advise a hiring manager on what is realistic to find.

That is the problem with generalist recruitment in software. Volume is easy. Precision is not. Gravitas is built around the latter.

Gravitas recruits across the full software development and engineering landscape, from backend to platform engineering to technical leadership. Our consultants specialise within specific technical domains, so the brief you give us is assessed by someone who understands what your role requires:

  • Backend Engineers & Developers - Java, Python, C#, Go and more. API development, microservices, distributed systems and data-intensive applications.
  • Embedded Software Engineers - firmware and low-level systems programming, real-time operating systems and hardware-software integration across industrial and automation environments.
  • DevOps & Platform Engineers - cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and site reliability engineering across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Solution Architects & Technical Leads - system design, technology strategy and technical leadership across product, platform and enterprise engineering organisations.
  • QA & Test Engineers - manual and automated testing, quality assurance strategy, test automation frameworks and DevOps-integrated testing pipelines.
  • Emerging Technology Engineers - AI and LLM integration, Internet of Things, blockchain and other emerging technologies becoming part of mainstream engineering organisations.

Gravitas works with two types of organisation across Germany, and approaches each differently.

The first is businesses building and running their own software engineering teams in-house: product companies, financial services and fintech organisations, energy sector businesses, and industrial and engineering automation providers, alongside established enterprises modernising their technology estate through digital transformation. Here, the conversation is about team composition, technical culture and long-term fit as much as individual skillsets.

The second is consultancies and technology partners resourcing client engagements: system integrators, managed service providers and tech consultancies who need to staff projects quickly and precisely. Here, the conversations are about specific technical capability, availability and commercial structure.

Gravitas offers contingency, retained and contract hiring, and adapts to whichever model suits the engagement. For a full picture of how we work, see our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages.

We support clients across Frankfurt's technology and engineering automation market. We recruit software engineers for:

  • Financial technology (fintech) - Frankfurt's position as Germany's financial hub means payments infrastructure, trading platforms, lending applications and regulatory technology all carry high engineering standards, and technical depth matters.
  • Energy sector technology - the software behind Frankfurt-based energy providers and utilities, from grid infrastructure to the data platforms supporting the region's energy transition.
  • Industrial and engineering automation - control systems, embedded platforms and the automation software underpinning Germany's manufacturing and industrial base.
  • SaaS and product-led businesses - software companies building B2B and B2C products where engineering quality is a direct competitive advantage.
  • Public sector and government digital services - the ongoing digitalisation of German public administration, spanning IT modernisation and citizen-facing digital services at both federal and state (Land) level.
  • Consultancies and system integrators - software engineering resource for client delivery across all of the above sectors.

Specialist software engineering recruitment outperforms generalist recruitment at every stage of the hiring process - sourcing, assessment, market intelligence and network reach. Generalist recruiters can fill software engineering roles; the cost shows up later, in lost time, delivery risk and team disruption from a poor hire.

  • Technical depth in sourcing - our consultants know which GitHub profiles, open-source contributions and technical communities signal genuine engineering capability. They are not keyword-matching CVs against job descriptions.
  • Honest candidate assessment - we assess coding ability, system design thinking and engineering judgement before a candidate reaches your interview stage. We are not passing through every applicant and letting you do the filtering.
  • Market intelligence you can use - live salary benchmarks, day-rate data, realistic availability timelines and an honest view of what your brief will attract in the current market. Not what you want to hear; what is true.
  • Deep candidate networks - relationships with software engineers built over years, across disciplines and seniority levels. We find people who are not actively looking and not on job boards.
  • Permanent and contract expertise - whether you need a software engineer embedded long-term or a specialist contractor for a defined engagement, we work across both and understand the commercial structure and contractor status considerations of each, including Germany's framework for false self-employment (Scheinselbstständigkeit).
  • Sector knowledge - we understand the specific engineering context of financial technology, energy and industrial engineering automation. That knowledge shapes the brief, the search and the shortlist.

Market intelligence: Software Dev & Engineering

Across the roles we recruit for, a small number of core technologies show up consistently, though the specific mix shifts by specialism and sector.

  • Backend and automation languages: Java and C# are the most consistently requested languages across backend and industrial automation roles, with Python and C/C++ featuring heavily in embedded and control systems work, and Go appearing in infrastructure-heavy environments.
  • Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure and GCP between them cover the majority of infrastructure and platform engineering briefs, with Azure particularly common among financial services clients, reflecting Frankfurt's concentration of banking and financial institutions.
  • Data and AI-adjacent skills: SQL remains close to universal, and briefs increasingly ask for AI and LLM integration experience layered on top of core engineering skill, rather than in place of it.

The technology named on a job spec is rarely the whole story. The engineers who move fastest through a process are the ones who can explain the trade-offs behind a technical decision, not simply list the tools on their CV, and that is what Gravitas assesses for before a candidate reaches your shortlist.

German software engineering salaries in 2026 vary by specialism, seniority and sector competitiveness, in permanent (annual,  gross) and contract (Tagessatz / day-rate) terms. These ranges are based on current German IT salary and freelance-rate benchmarking data:

  • Mid-level Software Engineer (2–5 years) - €58,000 to €80,000 permanent; €550 to €700 per day contract
  • Senior Software Engineer (5+ years) - €75,000 to €120,000 permanent; €650 to €800 per day contract
  • Principal / Staff Engineer - €105,000 to €165,000 permanent; €750 to €900 per day contract
  • Engineering Lead / Engineering Manager - €95,000 to €170,000 permanent
  • Solution Architect - €92,000 to €160,000 permanent; €800 to €960 per day contract

Frankfurt-based roles in financial services typically sit at the upper end of these ranges, with banking-specific positions commanding a 10–15% premium for regulatory expertise. Remote roles have narrowed regional variation but not eliminated it at senior and leadership level. For tailored benchmarking by role, specialism and location, visit our benchmarking page.

AI hasn't solved Germany's IT skills shortage; it's reshaped it. Demand for software engineering talent remains high, and most employers expect that to continue rather than ease. What's changed is what companies are hiring for: routine, spec-following work is increasingly automated, and the bar for what counts as a strong junior hire has moved up accordingly. AI competency is becoming a baseline expectation across the board, and for backend, embedded and QA engineering specifically, that shows up as AI and LLM integration experience sitting on top of core engineering skill, not replacing it. AI literacy is an area we recommend you implementing into your hiring strategies, if it’s not already there.

Candidates have adjusted faster than the trending market narrative suggests. Most now use AI tools as part of daily work, but trust in what those tools produce is low and falling. The most frequent complaint we hear echoes what the wider industry trend: ‘AI gets you most of the way there, and the real skill is knowing where it's wrong’, for this you need the specialist background knowledge. This should change what an interview conversation looks like - candidates increasingly expect to be asked how they use AI, not whether they do.

We’re also seeing reflections in what a weaker interview process looks like. AI-assisted ‘cheating’ in technical interviews is now common enough that the standardised coding test many companies still rely on has stopped being a reliable signal. Our assessment process focuses on system design thinking and the reasoning behind a technical decision rather than a scripted test result, and why that approach matters more now than it did a few years ago.
