Starting your Career in Dynamics 365

Expert advice from Associate Director, Kumar Gawri

<b> Starting your Career </b> in Dynamics 365

Most people arrive at Dynamics 365 from one of two directions. A business or finance background, often including direct experience with the processes Dynamics 365 is configured to run, suits functional consulting well. A software development background, most commonly in C#, suits technical consulting. Microsoft also runs a genuine, established certification path for Dynamics 365, which is a credible way to demonstrate platform knowledge even without direct project experience yet - covered in more detail below.

Functional consultants:

  • Deep understanding of a specific business process, such as finance, sales or supply chain, and how it should actually work in practice.
  • Ability to translate a business requirement into Dynamics 365 configuration, rather than just describing the requirement.
  • Client-facing communication and training skills, since functional consultants spend real time explaining the system to end users.

Technical consultants:

  • Strong C# and software development skills, and a solid grasp of Dynamics 365's underlying architecture.
  • Experience integrating Dynamics 365 with other business software and systems.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure and cloud computing, since Dynamics 365 is built on it.

Some modules and specialisms are consistently harder to fill than others, and that works firmly in a candidate's favour. Finance-focused functional consultants, and technical consultants who can architect a solution rather than just configure or code to a specification, remain the specialisms in shortest supply - if anything, the gap runs deeper here than in other markets. Germany's rolling e-invoicing mandate is driving urgent demand for finance consultants who can handle XRechnung and ZUGFeRD compliance alongside core German requirements like the DATEV interface and SKR03/SKR04 chart of accounts, while genuinely senior technical architects are scarcer than the raw numbers suggest, simply because Germany's ERP talent pipeline has grown up around SAP rather than Dynamics.

Dynamics 365 professionals can build rewarding careers in both permanent and contract positions, with demand driven by organisations investing in ERP modernisation, CRM transformation and the wider Microsoft ecosystem. Salaries vary by specialism, but candidates with expertise in areas such as Finance, Supply Chain, Solution Architecture and Power Platform typically sit at the upper end of the market. As businesses continue to expand their use of Dynamics 365, experienced consultants, developers and architects remain in strong demand.

Seniority Level Typical Permanent Salary
Junior / Associate Consultant €38,000 - €52,000
Functional or Technical Consultant €52,000 - €75,000
Senior Consultant €68,000 - €90,000
Solution Architect €85,000 - €115,000
Programme / Delivery Manager €75,000 - €105,000

Dynamics 365 pay doesn't follow the same regional pattern as pure software engineering roles, because the work itself concentrates differently. Frankfurt leads, not because of a general finance-hub premium the way it does for other areas of tech, but because Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations work is currently disproportionately finance-sector-driven:

Region Typical Permanent Salary
Munich & Bavaria €45,000 - €100,000
Berlin €42,000 - €90,000
Frankfurt & Rhine-Main €48,000 - €105,000
Stuttgart & other major hubs €44,000 - €95,000
Regional Germany €40,000 - €85,000

Freelancing is also a well-established route within the Dynamics 365 market. Freelance rates typically range from €85–€130 per hour, with higher premiums often for solution architects, finance specialists and consultants supporting complex transformation programmes. For professionals with sought-after module expertise and a proven delivery track record, the freelance market can offer both attractive earning potential and exposure to some of Germany's most ambitious Microsoft-led initiatives.

Microsoft runs a structured certification path for Dynamics 365, starting with foundational certifications and moving into role-specific ones for functional and technical consultants. It's a genuine, recognised credential in this field, though the specific certifications on offer do change over time, so it's worth checking Microsoft's own current list rather than relying on older guidance. A certification is a strong addition to a CV, particularly early in a career, but real project experience still tends to carry more weight once you're a few years in.

Move your Data Analytics Career Forward

Expert advice from CEO, Jonathan Ellerbeck

Move your <b> Data Analytics Career Forward </b>

Dynamics 365 careers often follow a structured progression path, with opportunities to specialise in either the functional, technical or leadership side of the Microsoft ecosystem. As professionals gain experience, the focus typically shifts from delivering individual workstreams to shaping wider business and technology outcomes.

  • Junior / Associate Consultant – building hands-on experience within a specific module or specialism, supporting client projects and developing platform knowledge under guidance.
  • Consultant to Senior Consultant – taking ownership of larger workstreams, managing stakeholder relationships and leading more complex configuration, development or implementation activities.
  • Senior Consultant to Solution Architect – designing end-to-end solutions, translating business requirements into scalable platform designs and guiding project delivery across multiple teams.
  • Technical track – progressing into Senior Architect, Principal Consultant or Practice Lead roles for those who want to deepen their expertise and influence large-scale transformation programmes.
  • Management track – moving into Programme Manager, Delivery Lead or Practice Manager positions, with greater responsibility for project success, team leadership and strategic direction.

One trend we see consistently across the German market: consultants who develop expertise beyond a single Dynamics 365 module often unlock the strongest long-term opportunities. Experience across areas such as Power Platform, Azure, integrations and solution architecture is increasingly valuable, particularly for professionals looking to progress into senior consulting, architecture or programme leadership roles.

Copilot, Microsoft's AI assistant now built directly into Dynamics 365, is changing some of the more repetitive parts of the job - drafting standard configuration, summarising customer records, generating routine reports, rather than replacing the judgement needed to design a solution or manage a client relationship. For functional consultants, that means less time on manual data entry and reporting and more time on genuine business analysis. For technical consultants, AI-assisted coding tools are speeding up boilerplate development work in the same way they are across software engineering generally.

Dynamics 365 remains one of Germany's most talent-constrained technology markets. While hiring activity across the wider IT sector has become more measured, demand for experienced D365 professionals continues to outpace supply, particularly in finance, ERP transformation and solution architecture.

Much of that demand is being driven by ongoing digital transformation programmes and regulatory change. Functional consultants with strong Finance & Operations experience, particularly those who understand German accounting processes, e-invoicing requirements, DATEV integrations and local compliance frameworks, are especially difficult to find. On the technical side, senior consultants and solution architects who can design end-to-end Dynamics ecosystems remain highly sought after.

The market also has a distinct regional profile. Frankfurt continues to be a major hub for finance-led Dynamics projects, while Munich and Stuttgart benefit from strong demand across manufacturing, automotive and the wider Mittelstand sector. Business Central opportunities are often spread more broadly across regional Germany, supported by Microsoft's extensive partner network.

Our view is that, Dynamics 365 is still a specialist market where genuine expertise commands a premium. Professionals who combine strong functional knowledge, architecture capabilities or industry-specific experience are particularly well positioned, with both permanent and freelance opportunities remaining consistently strong.

Dynamics 365 work suits remote and hybrid arrangements reasonably well for much of its lifecycle, since configuration, development and even a good deal of client training can happen over video call rather than in person. Client-facing workshops early in a project, and the final stages of a go-live, still tend to benefit from time on-site with the client.
Freelance and contract work is well established in the Dynamics 365 market, running through Germany's freelance status (Selbstständigkeit) as with other technology roles, and is a genuinely common way for experienced consultants to work across several client projects at once rather than committing to one employer.

Dynamics 365 expertise is in demand wherever organisations are modernising business processes, replacing legacy systems or investing in Microsoft's cloud ecosystem. Opportunities span both consulting and end-user environments, giving professionals the flexibility to build careers in implementation, transformation and long-term platform ownership.

  • Microsoft Implementation Partners: delivering Dynamics 365 projects for clients across multiple industries, from initial design through to deployment and optimisation.
  • In-House Dynamics 365 Teams: organisations running and developing their own Dynamics 365 environments to support business operations and continuous improvement.
  • Manufacturing & Industrial Businesses: leveraging Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain solutions to drive efficiency across production, logistics and operations.
  • Retail & Consumer Businesses: using Dynamics 365 to enhance customer engagement, sales processes and omnichannel experiences.
  • Financial Services: implementing Dynamics 365 solutions to streamline operations, improve reporting and strengthen customer relationship management.

Germany's Dynamics 365 market is shaped by its position as one of Europe's largest enterprise software economies. Many professionals work on transformation programmes involving complex ERP landscapes, integrations and cloud migrations, making experience with business systems, change management and the wider Microsoft ecosystem particularly valuable.
